"Sound" has come of age. Over the last two years, Kathryn Thompson conceived, and then coordinated and fostered the growth of a therapy or technology that uses sound to heal the human body. The company, Sound Support Network, is based in Virginia Beach, Virginia, but the BioHarmonics technology is practiced throughout the United States, Europe, Canada and Australia.
BioHarmonics is a "non-invasive" technology using sound to strengthen the body, boost the immune system, restore vital energy, return to health and maintain wellness. This alternative form of healing compares the frequencies of the human body to the many instruments of an orchestra, which has the purpose of producing a glorious and harmonious symphony. Even one instrument out of tune, however, will throw the whole symphony into discord.
It is the same with the human body, and the pitches in the voice are the key to which instruments in the body may be out of tune. Much like the acupuncturist "reads" the pulse, or the iridologist "reads" the eyes, the BioHarmonics practitioner "reads" the human voice. Using a computer and a Korg tuner, human voices are deciphered and then plotted on a computer-generated graph that matches pitches in a musical scale. Because all things have energy, their vibrations are directly linked to particular frequencies. This scale can be used to interpret which parts of the body, mind, spirit and emotions are lacking energy.
"There is no doubt 'sound' is transformative. Tibetan and Gregorian Chants, Hindu Oujas, mantras and Oms, prayers that are spoken or sung and the springtime song of a robin are only a few of many examples that are testimony to the powerful effects of sound", Thompson explained. The sound that Thompson uses for treatment is just below the hertz level of audible sound, so the healing is not a melodious song heard by the ears, but rather a frequency felt as energy which the brain uses to create healing in the body.
The lower hertz level is one of two trademarks of BioHarmonics, since most other sound therapies use music and not individualized hertz frequencies. The other trademark of BioHarmonics is its ability to pinpoint where healing is needed by actually "reading" the voice. Other modalities use a written survey or questionnaire to ask the client what is going on with them, but BioHarmonics "reads" the voice and then is able to tell the client what is needed.
Very specific formulas are used to discover the sound, or frequency, which an individual needs in order to heal. The necessary sounds are derived from an individual's date of birth, natural inclination to either right, left or whole-brain thinking and an individual's own preference for which area of healing heeds to be tackled first.
"Everything has a vibration, including people. When a BioHarmonics practitioner finds that a person is missing a note in their scale, it is as if a part of the body is not getting enough gas to make that part vibrate at the appropriate frequency to make the missing note. We then make a formula to provide that gas", Thompson said.
The therapy of BioHarmonics itself is relatively easy and painless. Clients of BioHarmonics must "listen" to their tapes of sounds or frequencies for at least forty-five minutes each day.
Ideally, personal harmony and balance are indicated by an optimum level of energy in all the notes of an individual's voice scale. Sometimes pitches are missing altogether, or have very low energy vibrations. Frequently pitches may have entirely too much energy, detracting energy from other pitches and indicating stress, hurt or pain in the area of the body that the particular high energy pitch represents. Over time, BioHarmonics helps the body create the missing frequencies and balance out the over-stressed frequencies.
"I have found that the body has an innate ability to balance itself by using the tones and frequencies of BioHarmonics. I believe it is the body that regenerates the tone and that the process of regeneration is the healing power - more so than the tone itself. I also believe we all have the capability of regeneration, but unfortunately, we have just lost the ability to do it, or perhaps the environment has become toxic," Thompson said.
Thompson has always recognized sound as a very important element of living and even took a number of sound-related classes but nothing seemed to fit or work right. BioHarmonics came into being just as Thompson decided to quit the sound work and move into another field. The answers worked themselves out in Thompson's dreams where new methods of using sound for healing became conscious ideas. She then used the methods with her clients and procured amazing results.
"I started teaching other people my method, and BioHarmonics began developing on its own by word of mouth. Sound Support Network is truly an open forum for exchange of information. We, as practitioners, don't hold anything back. That is the very reason we have grown so much so quickly. Because we are so new, practitioners have shared a great deal of information".
"The most fun thing for me is watching a person's surprise at how much detailed and accurate information the initial voice prints reveal. People in general are really interested in alternative medicine, but they are afraid of leaving a traditional physician's control. I have found people to be more comfortable coming to BioHarmonics because they feel it is a more gentle energy flow. Also, our computer technology makes it easier to make the jump from traditional medicine. Once a person accepts BioHarmonics, it then becomes easier to explore other forms of alternative medicine. It's all about perception," Thompson said.
